Product types — dye sublimation aluminum sheets

We supply dye sublimation aluminum in several product formats. Each type is optimised for a specific use case. Below is an overview of our main product lines.

Gloss white coated aluminum sheet

Most popular blank for photo panels and metal prints. High-gloss white coating gives bright, vivid colour reproduction. Available in full sheets and cut blanks.

Matte white coated aluminum sheet

Same coating chemistry as gloss but with a satin or matte surface. Reduces glare. Used for display boards, office signage, and retail environments.

Brushed silver sublimation aluminum

Brushed metallic base with clear sublimation coating. Produces a metallic shimmer effect on the final print. Popular for awards and promotional products.

Gold / champagne sublimation blanks

Warm gold or champagne tone base. Used for plaques, trophies, and commemorative panels where a premium look is needed.

Pre-cut aluminum sublimation blanks

Ready-to-print blanks in standard sizes. Ideal for print shops, photo labs, and online sellers. Available individually or in wholesale packs.

Large-format sublimation aluminum sheets

Full sheets up to 1220 × 2440 mm for wide-format printing. Used for wall art, commercial displays, and trade show graphics.

Alloy types for dye sublimation aluminum

The base aluminium alloy affects stiffness, flatness, and surface quality. We offer three main alloy grades for dye sublimation aluminum sheet. Each has different properties and is suited to different applications.

1100 alloy — commercial purity aluminium

99% aluminium. Very soft and easy to form. Excellent surface smoothness for coating adhesion. Best for flat photo panels, decorative prints, and indoor wall art where a very smooth, defect-free surface is needed. Not recommended for structural or outdoor use without protective coating.

3003 alloy — manganese aluminium

The most common alloy for dye sublimation aluminum blanks wholesale supply. Good balance of flatness, surface quality, and moderate strength. Slightly harder than 1100, which reduces denting during handling. Suitable for photo panels, signage, awards, and promotional items. Widely stocked and cost-effective.

5052 alloy — magnesium aluminium

Higher strength than 3003. Better corrosion resistance. Used when the finished panel will be used outdoors, in humid environments, or where mechanical resistance is important. Slightly higher cost than 3003. Ideal for outdoor dye sub aluminum printing applications such as outdoor signs, garage doors, and exterior display panels.

Thickness types — specifications by use

Dye sublimation aluminum sheet is available in many thicknesses. The right thickness depends on the final product and how it will be mounted or handled.

ThicknessWeight (kg/m²)StiffnessBest use
0.3 mm0.81Very flexibleFlexible labels, wrap-around prints
0.45 mm1.22FlexibleBudget photo panels, thin blanks
0.5 mm1.35Semi-rigidStandard photo panels, sublimation blanks wholesale
0.6 mm1.62Semi-rigidPhoto panels, wall art, plaques
0.8 mm2.16RigidAwards, display boards, signage
1.0 mm2.70RigidOutdoor signs, trade show graphics
1.5 mm4.05Very rigidStructural display panels, large format
2.0 mm5.40Very rigidIndustrial signage, durable outdoor use

For most photo panel and metal print applications, 0.5 mm and 0.6 mm are the most popular thicknesses. They are rigid enough to hang flat but light enough to ship economically.

Coating types — what makes the sublimation work

The coating on the aluminium surface is the key component. Without the correct coating, sublimation inks will not bond to the metal. We offer three coating options.

Gloss white coating

Most vivid colour output. High colour gamut. Best for photo-realistic metal prints and aluminium dye sublimation prints.

Matte / satin white coating

Reduced glare. Slightly softer colour output. Better for text-heavy signage viewed under strong lighting.

Clear gloss coating

Applied over brushed or coloured base. The metal tone shows through the print. Creates metallic shimmer in highlight areas of the image.

How dye sublimation printing on aluminum works — step by step

The dye sub aluminum printing process is simple. You need a dye sublimation printer, sublimation inks, dye sublimation paper, a heat press, and our coated aluminium sheet.

  • 1
  • Print image onto dye sublimation paper using a sublimation printer
  • 2
  • Place printed paper face-down on the coated aluminium blank
  • 3
  • Tape paper to sheet and place in heat press
  • 4
  • Press at 190–210 °C for 60–90 seconds at medium pressure
  • 5
  • Remove paper immediately. Allow aluminium to cool flat
  • 6
  • Inspect print. Trim, frame, or mount as required
ParameterRecommended valueNotes
Press temperature190–210 °CHigher temp = more vivid colour but risk of ghosting

Note: dye sublimation is for aluminium only — the process is different from how to dye sublimation shirts. Fabric sublimation uses lower pressure and different paper. Always use a flat platen press for aluminium sheets, not a swing-away or roller press.

What is dye sublimation on aluminum?

Dye sublimation on aluminum is a printing process that transfers ink directly into a specially coated aluminium surface. The aluminium sheet is first coated with a polymer layer. Then a dye sublimation printer prints the image onto dye sublimation paper. The dye turns into gas and bonds permanently into the coating.

The result is a dye sublimation metal print with vivid colours, sharp detail, and a hard, durable surface. The image will not fade, peel, or scratch easily. It is waterproof and UV-resistant when the correct coating is used.

Dye sublimation aluminum prints last longer than paper prints. This makes aluminium dye sublimation prints suitable for both indoor and outdoor display.

What is dye sublimation paper?

The printer deposits sublimation inks onto the paper. When heated, those inks convert from solid to gas and transfer into the coated substrate — in this case, the dye sublimation aluminum sheet. The paper is a carrier only; it is removed after transfer. Paper quality affects colour accuracy and transfer efficiency. We recommend using 100 gsm high-release sublimation paper with our aluminium blanks for best results.

Frequently asked questions

What is dye sublimation paper?

Dye sublimation paper is a special transfer paper used with a sublimation printer. The printer deposits sublimation inks onto the paper. It is a carrier — not the final print surface. Paper quality affects colour saturation and transfer accuracy.

Can any aluminum sheet be used for dye sublimation?

No. The aluminium must have a special polymer sublimation coating. A bare or anodized aluminium sheet will not accept sublimation inks. Our dye sublimation aluminum sheet is pre-coated and ready for direct printing with any compatible dye sublimation printer and heat press.

What dye sublimation printer works with aluminum?

Any piezo inkjet printer loaded with sublimation inks works for printing onto dye sublimation paper. Popular brands include Epson EcoTank, Sawgrass Virtuoso, Mimaki, and Roland. The printer is only used to print the transfer paper — the heat press does the actual transfer onto the aluminium surface.

How are dye sublimation aluminum blanks wholesale packed?

Each sheet is protected with a PE film on the coated surface. Sheets are interleaved with paper to prevent contact. They are packed in strong cartons or on pallets depending on order size. All packaging is designed for safe international shipping by sea or air.

Is dye sublimation aluminum waterproof and UV-resistant?

Yes. The sublimation process bonds the dye into the coating layer — not onto the surface. This makes the image resistant to water, humidity, and UV light. For outdoor use, we recommend our 5052-alloy sheet with outdoor-grade gloss coating for maximum longevity.
